Reading Whiz

I've mentioned on here before what a reading whiz Elijah has become. Anyone who has witnessed his reading ability in the past few months has been completely blown away by it, including Matthew and I! I found a blog post from August 2009 where he was just learning to read, at three and a half. He was already reading short vowel words like bat, hat and sat. That in itself was pretty impressive. But lately, his ability to read anything and everything has just blown me away.

This last school year, his Kindergarten year, we picked up where he left off in his reading. He had just finished Hooked on Phonics for K, and began their first grade program. He pretty much sailed through it. What astounded me toward the end of this school year was his ability to read words he hadn't been taught how to read phonetically. He technically has never learned long vowels, silent e, and diphthongs, yet he can read words that contain them easily. It's pretty remarkable. I guess he's just a natural reader!

Also, he simply loves to read. It's been years since he's taken a nap. But he still has his "quiet time" every day. He usually will take a book or two, or three into my room and read while Sophia is having her afternoon nap. It's been great for all of us, and it make school so much easier! Right now he's reading Peter Pan, it's 160 pages. Again, we're simply blown away.
