A day at the ballpark

Elijah and I got a chance to visit Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon to see the Yanks play the Oakland A's. We were both really excited. It occurred to me I've never yet seen the A's live. As for the American League, I've only seen the Yankees, Red Sox, and White Sox.

The game was scheduled for 1 o'clock. Unfortunately, the northeast is suffering through one of the worst heat waves in recent history. It was 102 in New York on Friday. We dressed as cool as possible and started hydrating Friday night!

Here is Elijah inside the stadium. They gave out toy trucks with a Yankees logo on it to kids at the gate for today's promo.

It was a packed Saturday game--people everywhere! So Elijah held my hand as we walked casually all around the stadium to our section.

Our seats were in the middle-level deck, just foul of the left field foul pole, in row 19. That means we were really lucky because we were in the shade!! Here is our view, although the image makes it look further away than it actually was. Here is a picture from our seat that is zoomed in a little bit.

This is a picture of Elijah's favorite Yankee: Derek Jeter. This was taken before the game started, when the players were stretching and jogging.

Jeter got 3 hits including a double.

The former-Yankee, Hideki Matsui, hit a homer for the A's, which turned out to be the difference in the game. The A's won 4-3. The Yankees almost staged a comeback in the 8th and the 9th. But in the 8th Jorge Posada came in to pinch hit and ended the rally with a double-play. In the 9th they had runners on 1st and 2nd w/ no outs. Curtis Granderson struck out but on the pitch the runners managed a double-steal: one out, tying run in scoring position. Then Mark Texiera popped up, which made the score 4-3 and put the tying run on 3rd base. Robinson Cano, the reigning Home Run Derby champion stepped to the plate. With a 1-1 count, just before the pitcher threw the ball, Don't-Ya-Know-Robbie-Cano appeared to call time-out but the home plate umpire didn't grant it. By that time the pitch was on its way. I suppose he was distracted because he swung at an ugly curve that was way high and outside. He hit an easy grounder to the left side and was thrown out to end the game... Boo hoo...

We did get to see the Yankee right fielder, Nick Swisher, hit a super long homer to right. Here is a picture I took as the pitcher was throwing the ball that got pounded. Swish-ilicious!
