To kick off our first free weekend since last summer (and in anticipation of a lot more free weekends now that Matthew is DONE with grad school) we headed to Sleeping Giant State Park, just a twenty minute drive from our house. It's crazy this place was so close and we've never been, but hiking isn't an obvious choice for us since we still have one little kid!
 |
| Off we go! |
Don't be fooled by the above photo, there were lots of people out there since the weather was a gorgeous sixty-five degrees! Since we had the kids, we got passed A LOT! We took a relatively easy path up to the top where there is a cool observation tower. Did I say an easy path? Try 1.6 miles EACH WAY. Yeah, we're nuts. Needless to say, Sophia spent most of the hike like this...
 |
| Sophia and Elijah were both obsessed with finding lots of sticks and using them as weapons, of course! |
 |
| Action shot! |
 |
| Taking a break (we had a lot of these). And don't adjust your screen, that is my actual hair color. |
 |
| Can you spot Matthew? |
 |
| Finally made it to the observation tower! |
 |
| Checking out the sights. New Haven is just behind Fifi's head here. |
 |
| Matthew and Elijah had to go off the trail a little on the way down. |
And now I present,"Things We Learned On Our Hike."
- Sticks are awesome.
- Rocks too (Fifi insisted on bringing home a few)
- Snacks are essential! (We scarfed a whole bag of trail mix at the top)
- Going down is SO much easier than going up
- Don't take a three-year-old hiking unless you are willing to carry her most of the way
- 1.6 miles each way is a LONG way with kids
- You have room for a lot of chicken wings when you get home starving from your hike
Trust me, I know.
